Description

Ridge and furrow field systems with drainage ditches, plough headlands and furlong boundaries of medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and levelled earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located within the parish of Broughton Hamlet, Aylesbury, and centred at SP 84979 13985. Broughton Hamlet Parish was created in 2020 out of Bierton parish. The ridge and furrow field systems mapped extend beyond this modern boundary reflecting the area covered when the field systems were created. The northern boundary is now along the Grand Union Canal, completed in 1815, which cuts across some of these field systems. The area immediately around Old Manor Farm contains earthworks of a shrunken settlement (see MBC410) which shows no evidence of further field system remains within it. On the south side of the canal and to the east of Bear Brook well preserved earthworks remain visible on lidar visualisations. Modern arable land use on the eastern side of the parish has removed the earthworks visible in the 1940s. (1-7)
