Description

Three irregular shaped ponds of probable post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located south of the line of the disused railway and north of the line of the canal, Kingsbrook, Aylesbury, and centred at SP 83635 14373. Three irregular shaped ponds, probably post medieval marl pits or clay pits cut through medieval ridge and furrow earthworks. Underlying solid geology is Kimmeridge Clay Formation mudstones overlain with poorly draining soils. The two northern ponds are subcircular and approximately 32m and 20m across at their largest and the southernmost pond is L shaped and measures 24x29 at its largest. The ponds are situated between the Grand Union Canal and the line of the disused London and North Western Railway from London. It is possible that the construction of either of these could have necessitated local clay extraction. (1-2)
