Description

The earliest evidence of activity was a residual Neolithic flint blade fragment and residual Bronze Age pottery sherds were recovered in several pits and gullies. While no features from these periods were found, the finds indicate activity of these periods within the area.
The first datable features relate to the mid Iron Age, with numerous pits containing large quantities of pottery. One pit possibly used to store clay, potentially for pottery production, although no kilns were found during the excavation. Other features, including postholes and hearth-like features were identified.
In the Roman period a series of pits, ditches and gullies were established, along with a large east-west aligned defensive ditch towards the southern end of the site.
Early to middle Saxon period - Three sunken featured buildings (Grubenhauser) were identified, each containing associated postholes and early Saxon pottery. The Roman defensive ditch appeared to remain in use or was at least visible during this period. Other earlier ditches also appear to have continued use into the Saxon period.
In the late Saxon period a grid-like system of linear ditches was created, likely forming field boundaries or land divisions. It is likely during this period that the defensive ditch became infilled, and the land use changed from settlement to agricultural.
Medieval activity is indicated by several pits and gullies which contained 11th to 12th-century pottery. Although some of this may be residual (B1).
