Description
A medieval rectangular platform, linear banks and ditches are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located immediately E of Hulcott moat and centred at SP 85531 16727, the earthworks comprise a slight subrectangular earthworks platform about 40 metres NNW-SSE x 32 metres WSW-ENE at its widest points. Some 100 metres to the E of this are two parallel linear earthworks banks with long sides aligned NNW-SSE, one about 88 x 9 metres and one 84 x 11 metres, and each being separated by a linear ditch. On the S end of these banks is a broad linear ditch about 11 metres wide and 63 metres aligned WSW-ENE, on the N side of which is a linear bank. This may have been a fishpond as there is a complex of fishponds sited a further 225 metres to the E. Fragmentary linear ditches are also visible between the platform and the linear banks. The precise function of the platform, ditches and linear bank earthworks is unclear, but seems likely to be associated with fishponds and moat (1).
