Description

Medieval ditched enclosures, platforms and ridge and furrow blocks are visible on historic aerial photograph and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Sandwiched in closes between residential houses west of Burcott and the unnamed watercourse that runs N-S parallel with the village and centred at SP 87793 23835, the features extend about 770 metres N-S, from Burcott Lodge in the S to Burcott Grange in the N. The features comprise 6 contiguous small blocks of ridge and furrow, aligned WSW-ENE. To the N of these are rectilinear ditched enclosures, within which are three probable rectilinear ponds and a 3.5 metres wide double ditched linear trackway 130 metres long W-E. The W end appears to lead to a partial but probable circular 3.5 metres wide ditch that encloses an area about 21 metres in diameter. N of this are 4 further subrectangular ditched enclosures of various sizes that adjoins a larger block of ridge and furrow that is flanked on its W side by an earthwork bank. Apposite this on the W side of the stream and centred at SP 87682 24050 is a subrectangular earthwork platform about 52 x 35 metres at its widest points that is flanked by a boundary ditch, contiguous to which are two small blocks of ridge and furrow aligned WNW-ESE (1-4).
