- EXTRACTIVE PIT (Post-Medieval - 1540 AD to 1798 AD)
Description
A post-medieval extractive pit is visible on historic aerial photographs as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 150 metres E of Holmbeck Farm and centred at SP 87841 24332, the irregularly shaped extractive site is about 809 square metres in area. Aerial photographs taken in 1946 shows the earthwork features cut through the edge of a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks, and so post-date it. The extractive pit does not feature on historic OS map editions. On aerial photographs taken in 2022 and recent remote sensing data, the extractive pit appears to have been infilled and levelled (1-3).
