Description

A network of medieval hollow ways, terraced ground and platforms is visible on historic aerial photograph and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in fields W and SW of All Saints Church, Wing and centred at SP 87835 22501, the area is associated with a medieval priory (MBC739 / 0022900000) The main feature is a system of linear interconnected ditches that are likely trackways or hollow ways, aligned either SW-NE or NW-SE, that form a series of rectangular platforms or terraces over an area about 160 metres SW-NE and 80 metres NW-SE. Within these terraces are linear slopes and earthwork banks that suggest the site of former settlement. From this central area of activity, linear and curving hollow way extends WSW up to 300 metres and a further two hollow ways extend NW up to 275 metres through blocks of medieval/post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. One of the latter routes appears to follow a conjectural Roman road running from Hemel Hempstead to Leckhampstead (Historic England Research Record 1052249). No evidence of these features appears on historic OS maps. On aerial photographs taken in 2022 and recent remote sensing data, most of the features remain visible, although in one field, some of the hollow ways have been levelled (1-4).
