Description

A post medieval extractive pit is visible on remote sensing data as earthworks in Chucksell's Spinney, Ascott and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located within Chucksell's Spinney and centred at SP 89962 22295, the irregularly shaped extractive pit is about 8,010 square metres in area. The 1880 dated 1st Edition OS map shows Chucksell Spinney has an area of broadleaf woodland that matches the extent of the extraction, surrounded by coniferous plantation that forms the remainder of the spinney’s rectangular (at that time) shape. Tree canopy covers the site on historic aerial photographs from 1944 through to aerial photographs taken in 2022 (1-3).
