Monument record MBC47859 - POSSIBLE MEDIEVAL/POST-MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENT EARTHWORKS, THISTLEBROOK FARM

Possible medieval/post-medieval settlement earthworks are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located across two small fields about 785 metres W of Thistlebrook Farm and centred at SP 86554 17733, a line of eight rectilinear and subrectangular platforms are aligned NW-SE over 147 metres, with a further four platforms located immediately to the SW facing side linked by a network of connecting boundary ditches or trackways. To the S are a further two irregularly shaped platforms, also linked by an interconnecting boundary ditch. The sizes and shapes of all the platforms vary, but range in area from 29 square metres to 696 square metres. A possible pond is also visible. The features abut blocks of medieval and/or post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks on the SW and NE facing sides and almost abut on the SE facing side, suggesting contemporaneity. The boundary ditches or trackways extend S between these ridge and furrow blocks. (1-3).
