Description
Geophysical survey By Magnitude Surveys in June 2024 identified a large amorphous anomaly (B2).
Evaluation trial trenching carried out by Oxford Archaeology in August 2024 revealed a large sub-circular pit in Trench 15. The pit was 1.8m in diameter and over 0.4m deep, with sloping sides but was not bottomed because of its depth. It contained two fills, the lower a silty clay with abundant burnt flint and sandstone. A bulk environmental sample retrieved a small quantity of oak charcoal. The upper fill was clay which produced no finds. A possible Bronze Age date is tentatively suggested as the fill has similarities with burnt mound deposits. See report for detail (B3).
