Description
Evaluation trial trenching carried out by Oxford Archaeology in October and November 2024 revealed a small sub-circular pit in Trench 30. The pit was 0.89m wide and 0.22m deep with gently sloping sides and a concave base and a sandy clay fill which included frequent burnt stones and flecks of charcoal. The environmental sample from the fill produced abundant charcoal alongside occasional unburnt seeds of rush and small quantities of burnt flint. A possible Bronze Age date is tentatively suggested as the fill has similarities with burnt mound deposits. See report for detail (B3).
The feature had not been identied by the earlier geophysical survey (B2).
