Description

Evaluation trial trenching carried out by Oxford Archaeology in October and November 2024 revealed a small sub-rectangular pit in Trench 39. The pit was 0.42m wide and 0.11m deep, with steep sides and a flat base and a silty clay fill which included fragments of burnt flint, charcoal and flecks of burnt clay. The environmental sample from the fill produced abundant charcoal and frequent animal bone fragments. A possible Bronze Age date is tentatively suggested as the fill has similarities with burnt mound deposits. See report for detail (B3).
The feature had not been identied by the earlier geophysical survey (B2).
