Description
Grovehill Farm appears to have been built about the mid-19th century on farmland awarded to Ambrose Durrant during Parliamentary Inclosure In 1773-1774. During the 19th century the Durrant family acquired further land to the east and west, and in the mid-19th century the enlarged, improved farm was provided with a planned rectilinear farmstead at its centre, and with two ‘outfarms’ (cattle/feed yards) within outer parts of the farm’s land to the northeast (known as Durrant's Yard) and to the west. The main farmstead is first shown on 1881 OS mapping as a slightly open 2-yard regular farmstead characteristic of the later 18th and mid-19th century, separated from the farmhouse, which stands to the west with orchards and a walled and ornamental garden. In June 2022 the farmhouse is described as having a single pile front range (smooth rendered) with a double frontage with hornless 16 pane sashes at first floor and canted bays at ground floor to either side of a central porch. The house has a slate roof with twin gable ridge stacks. A large rear range has limestone rubble walls and brick dressings, traditional side hung casements at ground floor and 20th century windows at first floor. The farm buildings have been mostly converted to domestic use. The buildings on the east and north side of the yards are of limestone rubble with brick dressings, those to the south-west corner of brick and are probably a little later in date. The buildings include a large barn at the northern end of the east range. See report for detail (B1).
