Description
Linear ditches and banks of probable medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located west of High Holborn Farm (formerly Lower Barn Farm), Great and Little Kimble cum Marsh and centred at SP 82353 08050. Formerly in the parish of Little Kimble (amalgamated with Great Kimble in 1885) it is on the east side of a watercourse, probably Bonny Brook, which flows north from the springline at the foot of the Chilterns. It fits in to a meander/bend on the stream, forming a straight channel and measures approximately 160m in length up to 12m wide, which would be very wide for a mill leat. There are banks visible along each side of the channel and an inlet/outlet, on the west/stream side, approximately half way along its length. The earthworks to the south are former field boundaries which can be seen continuing on the east side of the railway, authorised in 1846. The earthworks fit in to the ridge and furrow field systems surrounding the site and it sits on the south side of the parish boundary between Little Kimble and Ellesborough. These earthworks are crossed by a later bank not present until 1994 aerial photographs, which appears to be the line of a pipeline that can be seen crossing fields to the east and west of this area. The earthworks may be a fishpond, but they are very isolated from any other features that are usually associated with a fishpond, or a possibly a mill pond; a mill is recorded in Little Kimble in the 14th century. The parish of Little Kimble was inclosed in 1805. There were no recorded field names in the HER to help with identifying these features and no features are visible on historic mapping. Modern land use is pasture and the earthworks are still clear on lidar visualisations. (1-9)
