Description

Three former field boundaries of uncertain date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant cropmarks and levelled earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 400m north of Terrick, Ellesborough, and centred at SP 83912 08578. There is no map evidence for these boundaries; modern landuse across the field is arable, and interior boundaries have been removed to create one large field. Land use in the 1940s appears to be pasture and no features are visible. The boundaries have shown up as crop marks across a change in geology, shown in crop growing patterns, in 2010 and 2017; the southernmost boundary is visible as a very low earthwork on lidar visualisations. Finds recorded in and around the same field are mostly Romano-British in date. Over two hundred findspots are recorded on the HER and the majority of them are Romano-British in date. A Roman Villa is marked on the Epoch 1 map but no sign of this could be seen on aerial photographs. Further boundaries and a subrectangular enclosure are visible in the fields to the north (see MBC2955) and these boundaries may be associated with those. Further investigation would be needed to confirm this. (1-4)
