Monument record MBC47815 - Medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, Aylesbury parish.

Contiguous blocks of medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, remnants of the former common open-field system, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks in Aylesbury parish and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604) (1-14)

Ridge and furrow field systems with plough headlands, furlong boundaries of medieval and post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks, levelled earthworks and cropmarks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located withing the parish of Aylesbury and centred at SP 82281 13563. The majority of what was mapped in the 1940s was earthworks, with only very few areas where cropmarks were the only evidence. Some of what was mapped, closer to the centre of Aylesbury, were already islands of earthworks within areas of housing. Some areas of earthworks were visible on the earliest aerial photographs but later developed for Stoke Mandeville Hospital, as part of the Emergency Medical Services in World War II, and two estates of prefabricated houses, constructed towards the end of the war. The majority of what was mapped has now been redeveloped as Aylesbury has expanded and only remains in areas preserved as school playing fields or green spaces in housing developments but the earthworks are clear on lidar visualisations. Some earthworks also remain preserved in parkland at Hartwell Hall. (15-52)

Scattered blocks of medieval and/or post medieval ridge and furrow, remnants of the former common open-field system, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in the NW corner of Aylesbury parish, on aerial photographs taken in 2023 and recent remote sensing data, all of the ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks visible on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s have been levelled and now lie under modern residential and industrial development (53-56).
