Description

Complex rectilinear system straddling a stream, in woodland. Bank with external ditch surrounds the enclosure with overall dimensions of approx 180m NE-SW by 140m NW-SE. This surrounds internal subdivisions including: 1) an oval banked enclosure (60m x 40m) in the SW corner on the west of stream which could be a Medieval Ringwork; 2) an 'axe' shaped ditched, with internal bank, rectilinear enclosure on the east of stream (65m x 45m), possibly of later date, inside of which is a regular cross shaped depression 20m x 20m and a rectangular pit 20m x 5m. The W bank of this internal feature has clearly influenced the route of the existing stream bed; 3) straddling the stream to the south, is another banked rectangular enclosure (50m x 35m), which is separated from the rest of the feature by a wide bank used to carry a modern track over the stream bed. This subdivision could be a pond or tank and may be younger than the rest of the feature. There are other E-W trending cross-cutting bank features in the northwest segment. And the feature is itself cut by ridge and furrow, though this might be associated with modern forestry. The whole feature is itself contained within a larger rectilinear enclosure MonID 892. This part of Wexham CP used to be a detached part of Chorley-cum-Upton CP (B1).
