Description

Post medieval water meadow or drainage ditch system is visible on historic aerial photograph as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located along meadows SE of Rowsham Bridge flanking the west facing bank of the River Thame and centred at SP 84793 17298, a sinuous ditch up to 4 metres wide extends from the river S for about 245 metres. Extending W from it are 10 parallel liner ditches up to 63 metres long, each spaced about 7 metres apart. It is possible that these are the remnants of a managed water meadow, or are part of a drainage system to alleviate heavy flooding On aerial photographs taken in 2023 and recent remote sensing data, the earthworks remain visible (1-4).
