Monument record MBC47788 - POST MEDIEVAL DRAINAGE & FLOOD DEFENCES, BERRYFIELDS / BUCKINGHAM PARK

Probable post medieval drainage ditches and flood defences are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located along meadows flanking the N bank of the River Thame and centred at SP 80817 15426, a sinuous ditch between 1.5 and 5 metres wide extends W-E in two sections for 476 metres and 600 metres. Perpendicular to this in two places are what appears to be flood defence earthwork banks up to 7 metres wide with boundary ditches that extend from the cultivatable fields to the riverbank. To the S of Quarrendon medieval deserted settlement, narrow earthworks banks also flank the W-E aligned drainage ditch for 300 metres. On aerial photographs taken in 2023 and recent remote sensing data, the earthworks remain visible (1-5).
