Description

A section of medieval road is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 100 metres ENE of Rectory Farm and centred at SP 80734 18401, a curving ditch about 22 metres wide extends about 272 metres SSE from the junction of the A413 and High Street in Weedon village, terminating at the trackway leading to The Lilies. It is documented that the layout of the Buckingham Road was changed in the time of Lord Nugent, when improvements were made to Hardwick Bridge A block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks abuts the road on the E side. A windmill mound that was mentioned in a grant of land dated 1692 sits on the W side of the road, and the windmill is shown on the pre‐enclosure map of Weedon on the W side of the road. On aerial photographs taken in 2023 and recent remote sensing data, the earthwork remains visible (1-7).
