Description

Nineteenth century garden park features are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in the grounds of The Lilies, the features comprise a circular mound16.5 metres in diameter with surrounding ditch that may have been a tree enclosure and centred at SP 80759 18505, an irregularly shaped lake that extends W-E for 154 metres along the N boundary of the parkland before turning and narrowing to the SE for a further 42 metres. A ditch extends from the end of the lake in the same alignment for a further 135 metres across the parkland. Whether this formed part of the original lake is uncertain. About half along the lake is a horseshoe-shaped earthwork bank of uncertain function but that may have been a garden feature. On aerial photographs taken in 2023 and recent remote sensing data, these feature remain extant (1-6).
