Description

Two post medieval extractive pits are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 300 metres N of Holman’s Bridge and centred at SP 81834 15599, two irregularly shaped extraction sites cover an area of about 10,846 and 5,908 square metres. One of the extraction areas cuts into a block of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks, so post-dating it. On aerial photographs taken in 1961, the earthwork quarries remain visible, but by 1976 have been plough levelled (1-3).
