Description
A square ditched enclosure of uncertain date and function is visible on historic aerial photographs as cropmarks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 240 metres ESE of Burston Hill Farm and centred at SP 83528 18508, a square ditch between 1 and 2 metres wide encloses an internal area about 16 metres square. Bisecting this enclosure is two linear ditches: one about 1 metre wide extends 215 metres from the NE, where it bisects the ENE facing side of the enclosure: the second ditch is sinuous and up to 1.4 metres wide, extending from the W for 157 metres to the ESE, where it meets the WSW facing side of the enclosure. Some 23 metres NW of the enclosure is a subcircular pit about 3 metres in diameter at its widest. Whether these features are contemporaneous with the enclosure is unclear. The cropmark remains of a post-medieval windmill mound is sited some 65 metres to the NNW of the enclosure, so these features may be associated (1-5).
Cropmark of a single small square enclosure of uncertain date visible on aerial photographs at c. SP 8347 1851. The cropmark is incompete with the southern side of the enclosure missing. The cropmark remains of medieval ridge and furrow and a plough headland or ditch can also be seen across the field, but it is not clear if the enclosure post or pre-dates the medieval cultivation (6).
