Description

Medieval parallel boundary ditches are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a close immediately S of Old Manor Farm in Cublington and centred at SP 84464 22331, 3 parallel ditches between 3.5 and 8 metres wide extend N-S for between 90 and 130 metres, spaced about 5 metres apart. To the E of these, a further 3 parallel ditches between 3 and 6 metres wide extend NNW-SSE for between 108 and 142 metres, irregularly spaced apart, though surviving fragments of ditch suggest further parallel ditches not visible on the available aerial photographs that would have been spaced between 10 and 15 metres apart. The NNW end of the ditches are linked by perpendicular ditches. Located at the western edge of the close and centred at SP 84334 22355 is a L-shaped ditch up to 2 metres wide that extends 16 metres NNW-SSE before turning SW for a further 24 metres. The function of these boundaries and features is unclear but the 1813 Ordnance Surveyors Drawing shows a linear field boundary in this location on the same orientation that was no longer visible on the 1880s dated 1st Edition OS map. On aerial photographs taken 2022 and recent remote sensing data, some of the ditches remain visible as shallow earthworks (1-5)
