Description

A medieval and/or post medieval rectangular platform and boundary ditch is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located on a field boundary about 1,020 metres NW of Manor Farm in Cublington and centred at SP 82772 222620, a rectangular platform about 29 X 25 metres has a boundary ditch up to 7 metres wide on the W, N and E facing sides, the S facing side being the field boundary. Within the platform in the SW corner is a circular hollow of uncertain date and function about 7 metres in diameter. The boundary ditch is abutted on its three sides by a block of medieval/post medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks. The function of the platform is uncertain, but may have been a stack stand, keeping winter fodder dry, a possible stock enclosure, or perhaps a small building platform for a long-demolished structure. No evidence of a structure is visible on historic OS map editions at that location. On aerial photographs taken in 2022 and recent remote sensing data, the earthworks remain visible (1-3).
