Description
A circular mound and boundary ditch, possibly a post-medieval windmill mound is visible on historic aerial photograph as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 275 metres SSE of Oak Farm and centred at SP 84089 20634, a circular mound about 13 metres in diameter is surrounded by a boundary ditch about 1.5 metres wide. No mention of a windmill is recorded on the 1813 Ordnance Surveyors Drawing or later historic OS map editions. The features are sited within a field of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation earthworks on a sharp north-west facing scarp slope to the NW of Aston Abbotts village, which suggests it post dates the ridge and furrow. Still just visible on aerial photographs taken in 1960, the features are no longer visible on aerial photographs by 1976. On aerial photographs taken in 2022 and recent remote sensing data, the features are no longer visible (1-4).
