Description

A medieval or post-medieval deserted settlement is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located within a small irregularly shaped close adjoining more regular, formal ‘parliamentary’ enclosure fields on the southern boundary of Great Ground and centred at SP 81145 20922, the earthworks extend about 280 metres W-E and 100 metres N-S. A series of parallel linear ditches aligned roughly N-S extends across the site, though whether boundaries or trackways is unclear. Intersecting these are ditches aligned roughly W-E, some of which are larger and may have been ponds. Two earthwork platforms are visible, one rectangular (15x18 metres) and one D-shaped (32x12 metres at its widest). Nothing is recorded on the available OS historic mapping editions. (1-3)
