Description

A Second World War Royal Air Force camp Site No. 12 accommodating personnel from nearby RAF Wing is visible on historic aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field immediately W of Lane Farm and centred at SP 84536 21984, the camp accommodated personnel from nearby RAF Wing airfield. The camp comprises officers’ quarters, sergeants’ quarters, airmens’ quarters, ablution blocks and latrines, three earth buried air raid shelters and a picket post (sentry box), all linked by a pathway system and reached by an access road. The earliest available aerial photographs to the project are dated to March 1948, by which time two of the airmens quarters buildings have already been demolished and only the concrete base platforms are visible. Another airmens quarter building has lost its roof. By 1954, three of the airmens quarters buildings have been demolished, with a fourth airmens quarters building and an officers quarters building having been demolished by 1961. By 1976 other building are becoming ruinous. The latrines, ablution blocks, an officers and an airmens quarters building, and the three earth covered air raid shelters are demolished between 1976 and 2003. On aerial photographs taken in 2022 the sentry box and two of the sergeants quarters buildings remain extant, along with the concrete bases of several other of the camp’s demolished buildings and the access road (1-9).
