Description

A Second World War wireless telegraphy (W/T) site at RAF Wing airfield is visible on historic aerial photograph and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field south of Cublington village, immediately E of Abbotts Road and centred at SP 84264 21913, the wireless telegraphy site is part of Second World War RAF Wing airfield and was used to communicate with aircraft using morse code. The site comprises a fenced enclosure 91 metres square, centrally within which is a single rectangular building 26 x 6.5 metres, accessed by a 50 metres long and 1 metre wide linear pathway from Abbotts Road. Also within the enclosure is a 6.5 x 4 metres rectangular structure of uncertain function, though possibly to house a generator, centred about 23 metres E of the main building. Located N and S of the large building is a pair of masts or aerials. The 2 pairs are sited opposite and parallel to each other, each pair 27 metres distance from their respective side of the building. Both pairs of masts appear to have been dismantled by 1948, with all the remaining structures being demolished by 1954. On aerial photographs taken in 2022, no evidence of the former W/T Site can be seen (1-5).
