Type and Period (1)
- LYNCHET (Medieval - 1066 AD to 1539 AD)
Description
Lynchets of probable medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located on Aston Hill, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 88659 10652. These lynchets are much shallower than others recorded nearby, measuring only 1.5-2.5m in depth but extending for 250m in length in four lines and are crossed by pathways in the woodland. Land use in the 1940s was scrubby woodland, probably as a result of it having been cleared to supply timber for the trenches in WWI; modern land use continues as woodland where it is part of Wendover Woods.
