Description

Four chalk pits of probable post medieval date are visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in woodland approximately 600m north east of Astonhill Farm, Buckland, and centred at SP 89845 10333. The pits are irregular shaped and measure 8m across and 16x26m at the largest and there are mounds of heaped spoil on the outside of two of the pits. The underlying geology is of Lewes Nodular Chalk Foundation, mainly used for lime and flint nodules, and Holywell Nodular Chalk Formation, usually exploited for clunch, lime and flint. Land use in the 1940s showed scrubby woodland and modern land use continues as woodland. (1-4)
