Description

A chalk pit of probable post medieval date is visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in woodland approximately 430m north east of Aston Hill Farm, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 89741 10248. The chalk pit is irregular in shape and measures 19x15m at its largest. It is cut in to Lewes Nodular Chalk which is mainly used for lime and fling nodules. Land use in 1945 was scrubby woodland, possible resulting from the clearance of the area around Halton to provide timber for the trenches in World War I; modern land use continues as woodland. (1-5)
