Description

Ridge and furrow field systems of medieval and post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks, levelled earthworks and cropmarks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located within the parish of Drayton Beauchamp that falls inside the project area, and centred at SP 89324 13327. Drayton Beauchamp is a long narrow parish that crosses the Chilterns chalk escarpment and only the northern end of the parish is within the project area. The underlying geology is Greensand Gault and mudstones and also the West Melbury Chalk Formation at the foot of the escarpment; ridge and furrow earthworks were mapped on both geologies. The main land use within this area is arable which has resulted in the levelling of most of the earthworks that were visible in the 1940s, the area is also crossed by the line of the A41, where it bypasses Aston Clinton, and the line of the Grand Junction Canal which have both removed earthworks.
