Description

Practice trenches of probable World War I date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and levelled earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located within the golf course on Aston Hill, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 89490 10513. The trenches are approximately 1100m east of North Camp (MBC22241), the World War I camp of temporary buildings, at Halton, and 550m south west of a large area of practice trenches (MBC22239). The trenches were likely dug in World War I, when much of the woodland was cleared to send timber for the trenches in the war, but may have been re-dug as training exercises later. They are within the Chiltern Forest Golf Course at the time of this project. (1-4)
