Description

Ridge and furrow field systems of medieval and post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks, levelled earthworks, cropmarks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located within the parish of Halton and centred at SP 87068 10694. The parish of Halton is a long narrow parish on the edge of the project area. It crosses the Chilterns escarpment and extends to the north west, across the lower lying Gault Formation and Greensand Formation mudstones and siltstones, which is where the ridge and furrow field systems have been mapped. These field systems also include plough headlands and furlong boundaries and are crossed and surrounded by drainage and boundary ditches. This parish contains the RAF training camp created within the late 19th century parkland at Halton Hall. The creation of this parkland may have removed any remaining earthworks; cropmarks of former field systems are visible across the area that is now the airfield. Pasture fields to the south of the airfield contain well preserved earthworks and others remain only in woodland. No ridge and furrow earthworks were recorded on the chalk of the Chilterns and the south of the parish lies outside the study area for the project.(1-16)
