Monument record MBC47228 - Medieval and/or post medieval terraces, banks and ditches, The Old Mill

Medieval and/or post-medieval terraces, banks and ditches are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located along both sides of a watercourse about 290 metres N of The Old Mill (formerly Wingmill) and centred at SP 87501 21985, the features extend across an area about 270 metres N-S and 240 metres W-E. Two parallel linear scarp slopes to the E of the stream form a terrace 5 metres wide and 62 metres long aligned N-S. immediately south of this divided by a ditch, another two parallel scarp slopes form a terrace about 3.5 metres wide and 58 metres long, aligned NNW-SSE. To the W of these features and the stream, a linear earthwork bank up to 11 metres wide extends about 270 metres NNE-SSW. About 80 metres W is this, an 80 metres long earthwork bank runs parallel. To the E, a 3 metres wide ditch also runs parallel with the bank on the same NNE-SSW alignment. The function of these earthworks is unclear but may have acted as flood defences or are associated with the former mill. On aerial photographs taken in 2022 and recent remote sensing data, the earthworks remain extant (1-3).
