Description
A chalk pit of post medieval date is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 100m west of Astonhill Farm, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 89235 10088. A long narrow chalk pit, measuring approximately 84x23m and cut in to Lewes Nodular Chalk Foundation, mainly used for lime and flint nodules. It is not shown on historic mapping but a wooded area of the same shape is visible in the garden in front of the farmhouse at Astonhill Farm and this can also be seen on 1940s aerial phtograph. Lidar visualisations show the earthworks clearly.(1-3)
