Type and Period (1)
- PRACTICE TRENCH (Modern - 1914 AD to 1918 AD)
Description
Practice trenches of probable World War I date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located north west of Astonhill Coppice, Aston Clinton and centred at SP 89258 10593. These are located within what is now Chiltern Forest Golf Club; landscaping for the greens and fairways at the golf club has removed most evidence of the trenches but lidar visualisations show some subtle earthworks. Further remains of practice trenches can be seen around the golf course and the surrounding area, mostly removed or obscured by modern landuse but showing that they likely covered a much larger area than has been recorded to date.(1-5)
