Monument record MBC47220 - Practice trenches, north west of Astonhill Coppice, Aston Clinton

Practice trenches of probable World War I date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant soilmarks and earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located on the golf course, now Chiltern Forest Golf Club, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 88956 10799. These trenches are approximately 500m east of the site of North Camp, the World War I temporary buildings at RAF Halton. The trenches are visible as soilmarks and cropmarks on 1940s and 1970s aerial photographs and as low earthworks on the lidar visualisations. Landscaping for the greens and fairways at the golf club has removed most evidence of the trenches but high resolution lidar visualisations show some subtle earthworks and cropmarks remain on aerial photographs.
