Description

Possible former field boundaries of possible Iron Age date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located at 390m south of Astonhill Farm, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 89550 09744. These low eathworks, forming right angled and sinuous boundaries that could be late prehistoric or medieval field boundaries. An Iron Age hillfort, Boddington Camp, 2km to the south west also has field systems surrounding it, and field systems were also mapped in Dancersend Nature Reserve, approximately 420m to the south. The earthwork range in width from 5-23m and some of them are situated within the Dancersend SSSI, noted for unimproved chalk grassland, scrub, coppiced and regenerating woodland and plantations, and the remainder are in grassland/pasture. Part of a bike park, temporarily closed at the time of mapping due to Ash die-back, crosses some the earthworks. Approximately 600m to the east of these field boundaries are earthworks of a probable Iron Age multiple ditch system, which may be contemporary with the field boundaries, which remains as upstanding earthworks clearly visible on the lidar visualisation but 140m outside the eastern edge of the project boundary and therefore not mapped as part of this project.(1-4)
