Description

Hollow ways of probable medieval/post medieval date are visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Halton Wood, Halton, and centred at SP 88715 09330. Deep hollow ways, partly shown on historic mapping, are visible as earthworks, up to 35m across at their widest on lidar visualisations, they are not shown on modern mapping. They cross the contours of the hillside at an oblique angle and are different in character, being deeper and not apparently leading to any specific location, other than the top of the escarpment, to other trackways mapped within the woodland. These are partly shown on the Ordnance Survey Epoch 1 map of the area and the Ordnance Surveyors’ drawing for High Wycombe drawn in 1812. (1-4)
