Description

Trackways and boundaries of medieval/post medieval date are visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Round Spring Wood, Bittam's Wood, Ballad's Wood, Tatnall's Wood and Bradnidge Wood, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 89663 09372. This area is recorded as woodland on the Ordnance Surveyors drawing for High Wycombe, drawn in 1812, and this continues through to modern aerial photographs. Land use on 1940s aerial photographs shows as scrubby woodland and modern aerial photographs show full woodland cover. Part of the area is within the Dancersend SSSI. The trackways would have given access to the many small chalk pits recorded within the woodland and cross the earthworks of possible late prehistoric field systems were also mapped within this woodland.
