Description

A former trackway or possible boundary of uncertain date is visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located close to the parish boundary between Halton and Aston Clinton and centred at SP 89416 08491. These earthworks are a long shallow ditch, approximately 600m long and ranging in width from 6-15m, with narrow banks on either side and further possible ditches on each side. This feature runs approximately north-west to south-east and is close to the parish boundary between Halton and Aston Clinton, which may be irrelevant but the southern end joins with the line of the parish boundary to the south. At the northern end of the trackway is a large chalk extraction pit (MBC24473), approximately 45x30m at its largest, cut in to solid geology of Lewes Nodular Chalk foundation, mainly used for lime and flint nodules. This extraction pit may not be associated with the trackway but a later feature; this cannot be determined from the sources available to this project and would need further investigation. Lidar visualisations appear to show that this feature possibly continues further north, along the same alignment, beyond the chalk pit but the features were not clear enough to map. Land use in 1945 shows as regenerating/replanted woodland on aerial photographs. The woods around Halton House were cleared in World War I to supply timber for the trenches. Modern land use continues as woodland, managed by Forestry England. (1-6)
