Description
A chalk pit and spoil mounds of medieval/post medieval date are visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Halton Woods, Halton, and centred at SP 89369 08245. A teardrop shaped pit measuring 20x10m at its largest, with long, narrow mounds of excavated spoil around the outside. The pit is cut in to solid geology of Lewes Nodular Chalk foundation, mainly used for lime and flint nodules. Land use in 1945 shows as regenerating/replanted woodland on aerial photographs. The woods around Halton House were cleared in World War I to supply timber for the trenches. Modern land use continues as woodland, managed by the Forestry England, and earthworks were recorded from lidar visualisations. (1-5)
