Description

Ridge and furrow field systems, field boundaries and furlong boundaries, with drainage ditches, of medieval and post medieval date are visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data as extant earthworks and levelled earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located within the parish of Wendover, inside the project area, and centred at SP 86499 08822. The project area covers only the northernmost part of the parish of Wendover which extends to the south east over the Chiltern escapement. Compared with other areas of the project there is little evidence of ridge and furrow field systems in this parish. What remains is discrete fields with earthworks within; the common fields were inclosed in 1795. The soils of the area are mainly free draining which may reduce the need for ridge and furrow earthworks or mean that lighter soils had shallower earthworks which have been ploughed away more easily. The underlying solid geology is of West Melbury Marl Chalk and Gault Upper Greensand. The Ordnance Surveyors’ Drawing for Aylesbury (1813-14) shows some of the boundaries to the east of the Grand Junction Canal.(1-7)
