Description

Geophysical survey found area of enhanced magnetic susceptibility, with 2 foci. Magnetometry revealed a complex of linear features, probably archaeological & a palimpsest of enclosures. Augering of ditch fills produced struck flint & a fragment of prehistoric pottery (B1-2).

Cropmarks of part of a probable Iron Age or Roman farmstead enclosure centred at SP 8737 2143 defined by a broad ditch with a thinner outer ditch, both with curved corners and one slightly convex side. This lies within a larger ditched enclosure. The remains can be seen in the corner of a field to the south of the Old Mill, adjacent to the A 418. About half of the enclosure is visible (c.90m x 100m), the remainder is truncated by the road and can't be seen in the adjacent field on the opposite side. visible on aerial photographs taken in 2013 by English Heritage as part of the Reconnaissance Recording Programme. Ditched enclosures and a possible ring ditch of probable Iron Age or Roman date, but possibly of earlier origin, are visible on historic aerial photographs as cropmarks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in a field about 440 metres NW of Lower Wingbury Farm and centred at SP 87343 21365, the main feature comprise a curvilinear ditch up to 3.5 metres wide that extends NNE-S for about 146 metres, then turns E for a further 11 metres. Extending perpendicular E from this ditch area, three ditches spaced about 31 metres apart extend 11, 22 and 36 metres, forming at least three partial rectangular enclosure, each with the E facing side open. To the E of this centred at SP 87405 21423 is an L-shaped ditch up to 4.5 metres wide that extends NNE-SSW for 56 metres, turning ESE for a further 56 metres. It intersects a curvilinear ditch centred at SP 87425 21386 up to 4.5 metres wide that extends in a curve for 90 metres NW-SE, truncated at both ends by the Wing-Rowsham road. Contained within the arc of the curve is a possible ring ditch up to 1.5 metres wide and centred at SP 87435 21392 that encloses an internal area about 16.5 metres in diameter. This feature is only visible on one available aerial photograph dated 2004 (6-7).
