Description

Linear boundaries of possible Iron Age date are visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located approximately 600m east of Boddington Camp in Halton Wood, Halton, and centred at SP 89103 08258. These field boundaries are on the southern edge of the project area and continue beyond this in to woodland further south, but these were not mapped. The field boundaries form irregular shaped fields, following similar alignments across the area and can be seen as long, low, parallel earthworks, approximately 4-6m in width, with right angled bends in places. They continue through the woodland and are crossed by later trackways. They appear to be part of a wider area of field boundaries which pre-date the woodland and may be associated with Boddington Camp, a Scheduled Iron Age hillfort (MBC4853). Landuse in 1945 shows young woodland, possibly as a result of having been cleared to supply timber for the trenches in World War I; modern aerial photographs show landuse as established woodland.
