Description
Three chalk pits of probable post medieval/modern date are visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Bradnidge Wood, Aston Clinton, and centred at SP 89476 09270. The pits are sub circular and they range in size from 6-11m across close to a network of trackways that run through the woodland, a mound of upcast soil sits in between two of the pits. They are cut in to Lewes Nodular Chalk Formation, mainly used for flint and lime. Land use in 1945 shows open woodland and modern land use is woodland. They lie within the boundaries of the Dancersend SSSI notified in 1951 for unimproved chalk grassland, scrub, regenerating woodland and plantations.
