Monument record MBC46768 - Two chalk pits in Halton Wood, Halton

Two chalk pits of probable post medieval/modern date are visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and were mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Halton Wood, Halton, and centred at SP 88699 09485. One pit is long and narrow, probably an agglomeration of several smaller pits along a trackway, and measures approximately 37x10m and the other is irregular shaped, also more than one pit joined together, and measures 18x12m at its largest. They are cut in to Holywell Nodular Chalk Formation, mainly used for clunch, flint and lime. Land use in 1945 shows woodland, but the aerial photograph is not clear enough to show the pits, and modern land use is woodland. (1-4)
