Monument record MBC46767 - Chalk pit, or possible dew pond, Halton Wood, Halton

A chalk pit of probable post medieval/modern date is visible on remote sensing data as extant earthworks and was mapped as part of the Aylesbury Vale Aerial Investigation and Mapping project (EBC18604). Located in Halton Wood, Halton, and centred at SP 89472 08470. The pit is sub circular and measures approximately 16m across at its largest with a line of upcast soil on the northern side; it is marked on the Ordnance Survey map as a pond so it may be a dewpond. The pit is almost at the top of the chalk ridge and is cut in to Lewes Nodular Chalk Formation, mainly used for flint and lime. Land use in 1945 shows cleared woodland, possibly cleared to supply timber for the trenches in World War I, but the aerial photograph is not clear enough to show the pit; modern land use is woodland.
